Puerto Rico

For many East Coast surfers, Puerto Rico is a mainstay for weekend getaway travel. Its close proximity to the U.S., affordability, and abundance of good, ridable surf make P.R. a top choice. This may not be news to a lot of you out there. Puerto Rico has been growing in popularity as a surf destination since the 1960's. And judging by the growing popluation of surfers and surf culture in P.R., it's paradise-like conditions are no secret.

The 411

Rincon, the primary surf destination, is located on the Northwestern side of the island. There are surf spots on the North side as well, and even a few scattered on the South side (primarily Summer spots).

But famed breaks such as Domes, Maria's, and Tres Palmas all exist on the Northwest corner. Consistent, ridable surf is common from September through May. You can expect shoulder plus swell in the Spring and Fall, and much bigger in the Winter. As frequent low-pressure systems roll up the Atlantic, Puerto Rico receives heavy, regular groundswell from distant weather systems from November to February. Expect to see many 15' plus days - even some 20' plus.

Be Aware:

  • Crowds - an estimated 25,000 locals surf, and plenty more flock here when swells hit
  • Locals - territorial, just like every other surf spot in the world...SHOW RESPECT
  • Urchins, Shallow Reefs - like most tropical surf breaks
  • Lock It Up - or leave windows down with 10 bucks cash on the seat...either way

Look Forward To:

  • Tropical Conditions - water temps mid winter are in the upper 70's
  • Consistent Surf - dozens of breaks, lots of points, clear water and lots of barrels
  • Great Eats - tons of good local food
  • Cool Vibe - friendly people, familiar faces, good times
